George:
Yes, the wet weather may be related. Once in the summer when the car was not used over a wet weekend, the shoes seemed to be rusted to the drums. A pop of the clutch got them free.
This is the first time that the emergency brake seemed to be giving me trouble. However, the past couple of days it has not been wet -- just cold.
I have new drums for the rear. The drum on one side wouldn't come loose and the castle nut on the other side didn't want to budge. I finally borrowed a wheel puller and bought a 1-1/4" wrench. Perhaps the rusting thing will not be a factor once I change the drums.
I will put new cables on for the emergency brake and try to get another 40 years out of the beast.
