Help me weigh my options: I need a new antenna

I broke my retractable antenna a coupla days ago; it had not retracted all the way for about a year. I didn't clean it frequently enough and I doubt that I ever will. Has anyone replaced the retractable POS expensive Volvo antenna with something a bit more discreet and permanent? The FUBA style antennas that come on VW's come to mind. I will probably do the replacement in January. Do I have to run an entirely new antenna wire to the stereo, or can I just make a splice where the old unit is now. Thanks.
