Checking for vacuum leaks-good methods 200 1986

This is probably an elementary question, but here goes: What are some correct ways to check for vacuum leaks? I've heard of people spraying all kinds of flammable aerosols at suspected leak areas, or using soapy water, etc. What's the story on this? Thanks, DougC
