engine pinging? need thoughts 200 1983

Hi all,

I am not sure if my engine is "pinging" or not.... i'm not really clear if engine pinging actual sounds like "PING!" or something else. my engine makes a rattley noise when going up hills, and while accelerating. i can't duplicate the noise while the car's in park though, only when it's in drive and only if i am actually accelerating... if i am coasting, it doesn't make the noise. at first i thought it was a front-end body rattle, but it seems like if it was a front-end body rattle, it would rattle even while coasting, and wouldn't only rattle upon acceleration like this does.

since i've never consciously heard "pinging" before, any opinions as to whether this could be pinging would be helpful, trying to cross items off the list.

p.s., switched to 89 octane gas & the noise is still there, FWIW...
