Distributor 700 1989

Lately, my 89 Volvo 760T has been running sluggish. The next thing I know, it wouldn't start. I took it to a mechanic and they say it's the distributor? What kind of price range should be expecting? What symtoms show a bad distributor?
I have a very limited knowledge of cars, and I can't afford to get ripped off! Thank you for your insight, help and time.
