will engine start with a bad O2 sensor? 700 1988

Gang, I've been doing lots of diagnosis on my non-starting volvo and I've isolated the oxygen sensor as having a bad ground.

WHat I'm wondering is whether the O2 sensor must be working for the engine
to start.

The following things either work or have been replaced.

1. I have spark.
2. BOth fuel pumps work and are pumping fuel to the engine.
3.DIstributor new, plugs, wires, fuel pump relay

any thoughts?
