REALLY long drives 140-160 1970

This summer my wife and I are going to take the plunge - we are going to drive across Canada in the Yellow Hornet, our 1970 145.

When all is said and done, it will be a trip of about 13,000 kilometres, or about 7,000 miles.

I am having the cylinder head re-done pretty soon here, and all new gaskets are going to go in - but what are some other things to look out for and prepare for. I am going to carry a spare water pump with me, as well as a spare fanbelt. I am also thinking of upgrading the alternator to the GM version. I'll also put on new radiator hoses, because this will be August, after all.

He has been converted to electronic ignition, so I am not worried about that. I don't have the overdrive transmission, but I drive pretty sedately, so I am not really all that worried about that.

Any good stories out there? I remember reading some good accounts here a few years ago of cross-country trips - anyone done anything like this recently?

I am really looking forward to driving this vintage European machine all over the place. I already bask in the attention just driving to and from work everyday - I can't wait to drive into Toronto or Montreal with my baby!

Thanks in advance;

Ross in Lethbridge, Alberta
