'89 740 radio - need code? 700 1989

i bought an original volvo radio for my '89 740 on ebay. i plugged in all the plugs that had a place to be plugged, with the exception of one thin black wire (maybe a ground?). but, there is no sound! the radio seems to work, when i tune in a station the 'stereo' light comes on, but no sound at all. does this radio require a code? it is not asking for a code.
