'89 740 radio - need code? 700 1989

If you're able to tune the radio, then I don't think it needs a code.
Why did you swap stereos? Did the old one stop working? If so, what quit?
Most of the Volvo systems use an external amplifier. It's possible that the stereo is working fine, but the amplifier is not.

Post back with more info.
