HELP!! WATER LEAK AT CAM GEAR 700

I was servicing the a/c on my '87 740 wagon and ended up with a nice pool of antifreeze under the car. Upon removal of the timing belt cover with the car running water was spraying from behind the top cam gear. This didn't make a lot of sense to me. Is it possible for water to be leaking from the cam seal or is leaking from a head gasket? Any info would be appreciated!! With the engine off I can't really see where the water is originating. Puzzled me! Thanks! THOM
