We have a 740GLE. A few days ago the AC fuse burned out, and when we replaced it (a couple of times) the new one would burn out as well. The local filling station diagnised the problem as a short in the AC system. They disconnected the compressor, and the fuse stopped burning out---which is important, since the windows and turn signals are on the same fuse. They said that a new compressor would cost around $900 (I think this includes conversion to R134A), although this was a bit of a guess and I am supposed to call back shortly for an exact price. My wife is insistent about taking it to the dealer, because she doesn't trust the local mechanic's diagnosis and she thinks the dealer may be cheaper. The dealer is far enough away that it is a hassle to get out there, so I'd like to talk her out of this. The diagnosis we got seems reasonable to me, and I don't think a dealer is EVER cheaper. Any opinions on either question?
