Replace head? 140-160 1969

Hi all,
Has anybody experienced a vacuum leak that was cured by replacing the head? I should mention that the motor was just rebuilt. Could there be a defect in the head that causes poor vacuum. EVERYTHING else has been checked and double-checked. My mechanic says that's the only thing left to do, short of replacing the whole motor. I really don't want to do that, it cost $1000. for the rebuild.
