A/C Conversion 700

Now that I've thanked everyone for their help, now I'm going to ask for more...

The A/C on my 90 740GL wagon isn't working and I suspect a leak in the system -- the system worked when I bought the car in November.

My question: should I convert to R134a? I talked to a local shop that specializes in Volvos and they said that while they'd be happy to do the conversion, they recommend against it because R134 is less efficient than R12 and the A/C would not be as effective -- especially on the 90 degree/90 percent humidity days that we get so many of here in Jersey.

Any thoughts?

Also, what kind of cost could I expect on a conversion?

Thanks
