The transmission on my '90 740 GL shifts great from 1st to 2nd gear at about 15 or 20 mph. It shifts fine from 3rd to 4th at about 45 or 50 mph depending on acceleration. Both of those seem pretty normal to me.
However, it really winds out and shifts late from 2nd to 3rd. Unless I "make" it shift by letting off the gas, it will not shift until over 40 mph even under normal acceleration.
I did a search of the archives and found many threads saying that adjusting the kickdown cable could help. However, I mentioned this to the guy at the transmission shop and he said this would only help if all the shift points were "late", not just one as in my case. He said adjusting the cable set the first shift point and the others fell into place accordingly and that you could not adjust just one.
The car has 105,000 miles, the transmission has been serviced regularly, and the fluid level and condition has been checked. Other than this one trait, the transmission seems to be fine.
Is my transmission guy mistaken? Is there an adjustment for this particular problem?
Thanks.
