Is there anything special about the alternator ground wire? I have the classic symptoms of a bad alternator - car can be jumped, but battery guage shows zero. FAQ says to check alternator ground from D- to the engine block. Mine is all corroded and has greenish goo on it like you sometimes see on an old battery. Now, the end of the alternator ground that connects to the alternator has a thick red covering on it. Now my question is: can I just build my own new grounding cable or is there something special about the stock Volvo cable? What is the purpose of the red covering? Is there a tiny fuse in line or something? What guage wire should I be using to replace or do I need to go buy a special Volvo wire?
The red covering can be seen on the wire in picture 2.3.1c at this URL: http://www.vlvworld.com/index.html?VolvoRepairManual/Section_2_3.htm
Many thanks in advance!
