A Button That Does Nothin' 200 1984

Inside the glovebox of my 1984 240GL sedan is a button in the left hand corner with a little picture of the trunk, with its hood open. When I push this button, nothing happens.

I wonder if, in the heyday of this car, something actually did happen. When I inspect the latch on the trunk, it seems anything but electronic. Can somebody enlighten me about the function of that button, please. Thank you.
