DECISION TIME...fix it or sell it? 700 1988

I have a very trusty 88 740 GLE Wagon. Bought it used in 99 with 79K miles on it. It has been a great second car, and is used primarily for my commute to work (I travel a lot, so it mostly sits at the airport). Anyway, now with 130K miles, it didn't pass the emissions here in Texas. I have posted before on this subject, and I'm confident that an oxygen sensor and probably a cat will bring it back to within limits. Now it has also come to my attention that I require engine mounts (yes the oil pan is resting on the sway bar), maybe a transmission mount, and possibly some front end work (it drives pretty well, but the front tires do not wear evenly, and it pulls alternately to the left and right). Can't forget the rest of the exhaust. I have already replaced from the center muffler back. Now I need to go forward, including the cat. The sunroof motor sticks sometimes, but it works. The heated seats gave up, but that doesn't bother me, unless it's a cheap fix.

Sounds like a lot, huh? I guess it is, but it really is a great car. I love the versatility...and it's pretty cheap to own (until now).

So I have done some looking around online. FCP Groton seems to have excellent prices, and I could get all of the parts I need for less than $1000. I am mechanically inclined, but I am eternally optimistic somethimes. I think a good amount of the work will be turned over to the professionals.

NOW, for the sake of argument, let's say I can get my car back up to speed, with no exhaust fumes inside anymore, for around $1500 (maybe more, maybe less, I really don't know). At this point, I have essentially matched the street value of the car in the first place. Should I fix it anyway...maybe not an awesome financial investment, but I will have a good car that should last for a while without much further attention. OR...should I sell it tomorrow for whatever it will bring and buy another one. I am thinking of something in the $5000 to $8000 range for a replacement wagon.

What would you do? Any advice.

This board is full of sound minded individuals; I look forward to your opinions!
My friends can't wait for me to get rid of it and buy a pickup, so I can't ask them.

Thanks, Greg
