Got to spend some quality time with my new-to-me '66 122S over the past few days looking for parking in NYC and today driving up to RI, and I really like this car. Enough power to keep up on the highway (and without an OD too), though a little noisy, which gets to my first question. I have new door rubbers and windlace and window scrapers, etc. Are there any tips or tricks involved in installing these? Same with a trunk rubber.... It looks like the trunk rubber has an adhesive on it- kind? Do door rubbers use it too?
Next question- the heat is there, but the control isn't so much! I'm guessing that maybe I need a new heater control valve, as it looks sorta crusty and greenish and the control cable doesn't move- is there anything to try before replacing? Drench with liquid wrench? WD-40? The heater fan has an intermittent squeal- a shot bearing? Is there any point I can oil/grease to maybe get rid of the squeal?
While I'm on controls.... To the left of the steering wheel, under the dash, there's a push-pull switch, sort of like the one that turns the light in the 'glove box shelf' area on. What does this do?
The car has IPD lowered springs/shocks and I'm finding the ride a little harsh on the less than ideal roads of NYC, etc. Anyone have thoughts on the progressive springs available? Supposedly the car has fairly recent urethan bushings, but if it dries up at all tomorrow I'm going to be jacking her up and giving the suspension a good once over- check the tie rods, ball joints, etc. She feels pretty good going down the road (enough so that I wasn't afraid to cruise at 80), but I know she can feel better!
ANd for the engine- seems pretty strong, but again, can be better I'm sure. I KNOW the Weber carb idle mix/idle and probably floats need adjusting, but before that I want to make sure the valves and timing are set right. I've done both a hundred times on my BMW bikes, but I'm sure it's a little different on an old Volvo... Is there anywhere that has a step-by-step?
Anyway, did I say I LOVE this car?
Thanks in advance.
