How to tighten automatic shift selector 700

The shift selector on my 740 is just a little to "jiggly" for my liking. I know something's amiss with it, because I was in a junkyard recently and happened to move the selector in a junker, and the selector had no play in it at all and I'd like mine like that. There's only a little play in it, however it's enough so that occasionally when I shift the gear to reverse I have to make sure I release the shifter so that the reverse light (white light) comes on (which then becomes a safety issue), and since the bulb inside the shift indicator is blown and has been since I acquired my brick I'll be (somehow) getting that console area off, so once I get inside of the console I'm hoping it can be a two-birds-with-one-screwdriver deal.

Also, there is a seat seam splitting on one of my rear seats. I know how to sew, yet am wondering if there is a recommendation on the type of thread to use or will regular cotton thread work sewing the seam?

Thanks for your replies in advance.
