overdrive 200

new volvo owner here , I just bought a 79 242gt and after driving it a couple hundred miles the overdrive has failed me. it kicks on every once in a while sometimes while in fourth and the button in the out position. around 3000 rpm it starts to buck and then slides into o/d. I have checked fuses and wires under knob . Is this bucking common could it be the relay? or something more major . pls help
