HELP - horrid gas mileage. Gone from 325 to a tank to 160. Thanks 700 1990

All right guys - this is driving me crazy. I can't afford to keep this 740GLE wagon if I can only get 12 miles to the gallon. I was having fuel problems and idle problems. Let me explain.

Sometimes I start the car, and it runs at 350rpm and almost dies.
Sometimes I start the car, and it runs at 1200rpm and thus drops hard into drive
Usually I start it and it runs normal.

I smell really strong vapor out of the exhaust now when i turn the engine off. not sure if it's 'rich' or what. too ignorant for that.

I just got 165 miles to my last tank of gas, whereas 2 months ago when i drove it from the east coast to Denver i was getting over 300. power dropped noticeably when i got to denver and then on to 10,000 where I am living in breckenridge.
I replaced the air filter yesterday and it helped with the power issue and downshifting hesitation.

Three codes came up - 1-2-1, 2-2-1, 3-2-2. they all relate to the MAF (AMM). would that cause that much drop in fuel economy? I am ready to buy a Fuel pressure regulator and MAF off ebay, but need your input. I have read and read and read the archives and am trying to make do. I tried to test the MAF and am not sure if i am noticing what i need to. Somebody said to clean it down inside with throttle body cleaner (any input there?). I also bought a multi-meter to test the O2 sensor, but I can't seem to locate the wire to complete the test.

would it be anything other than the MAF, the FPR, or the O2 sensor?

thanks in advance, and sorry for the long thread.

Brad
