Overdrive issues - 87 240/AT

Okay, so this week something went wrong with the OD.... Wife said it was intermitinly flipping on and off - the dashboard light was flipping on and off and the tranny was downshifting and upshifting...

Next day, it stuck.. OD light is lit, transmission's OD is disabled.. and I can now watch the gas gauge move!

Question and opinions... this sound electrical or mechanical? (Big Volvo Brains - Best guess - switch, relay or solenoid?
