Does anyone know how to tell if an injected head is an E or an F WITHOUT taking it off the engine? ALL ALL

How can you tell if a head is an E or an F without taking it off the engine? I have a '71 142E that I thought had an E head until someone told me that the 140 sereis did not have the E head. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
