Mysterious 'Low Coolant' lamp

Hello, all.

It all began 5 days ago when I started the cold engine of my 1992 960. The "Low Coolant" lamp lit up on the dash (what's this?) I checked the coolant level and it was at the 'min' mark. Just where it should be. I turned off the engine and took off the expansion tank cap. Looks good...no leaks. No problems detected. I then drove about 100 feet and the light went off. Hmmmm. After work, again, I started the cold engine and (uh oh) the low coolant lamp came on again. I checked for leaks, checked the engine and trans oil, checked the coolant level, the smell, etc. No problems detected. After driving 100 feet or so, the lamp goes out.

Well, this has been going on ever since. Still, there does not appear to be any problems or symptoms of leaking coolant. Does anyone know what type of sensor is on this engine or know how it works? I think mine has gone bye-bye.

Thanks in advance. Greg
