could this have really happen? 700 1987

Someone I know has a 1987 740 GLE Volvo. It's a 4 cylinder with non-ABS breaks. The person tells me that he slammed on his brakes to avoid hitting another vehicle. While braking he says one of the rear wheel calipers broke which in turn broke the wheel. Says it cost him $275 to fix. Is there any truth to this? I'm scratching my head on this one and would appreciate some insight on the matter. Thank you for any information on the matter.
