could this have really happen? 700 1987

2 possibilities I can imagine based on failures I've experienced: 1)the caliper corroded to the point that the holes supporting the pad retaining pins broke, allowing the pins to come out, and from there something catastrophic occurred, like the pads sliding out & scraping away at an alloy rim until it lost so much material it broke. Hard to imagine him overlooking that god-awful scraping for so long as to wear into the rim very far. 2) if a caliper securing bolt was drastically overtightened, it could have sheared on hard braking, allowing the caliper to pivot up into the rim. I've broken several of those bolts trying to get things apart, but never while driving.
