Intermittent Odometer problem 200 1985

Hi,

Recently, I am having a little odometer problem. The speedometer runs fine but the odometer just not counting...sometimes. At first I thought the odometer's gear went bad (from the forum) but I noticed something in last few days.

BTW, I stayed in Phoenix, Arizona. So this time of the year the temperature is at the 100-110s range. When the car is parked out in the parking lot, with no shade, the temperature in the car can go at least 10-20 deg higher. Okay, here's what I noticed:

In the mornings when I drive to work, the odometer will run fine, recording the miles accurately. But when I drive back from work in the evenings after the car is "bake" under the sun for 8-10 hours, the odometer quits. So yesterday I did a little experiment while I was out. The morning drive (8am+) of 30+ miles, the odometer worked fine. Then I parked under shade until lunch, drove another 10 miles, it worked fine too. I parked the car under a big tree when we were at lunch for 1+hr, it worked fine too when we drove back. At about 3-4pm, I moved the car to under the sun for ~1 hr, then start driving home (30+miles). This time, the odometer STOP working!! Oh, my temperature gauge also reached the redline while I was driving all day yesterday...even with my A/C off (imagine my friend and I were roasting ourselves in the car. :( ) That was new too. I checked the coolant level and it's right at level and the engine compartment doesn't feel too hot for me either.

Can anyone kindly explain to me how how the odometer and the outside temperature are linked? Do I really have a bad odometer or there is something else under the dashboard is bad? I never had this odometer problem for the past few years in the hot Arizona summer heat. And will the temperature gauge have anything to do with the odometer issue?

Thanks,
tzer
