Poor, poor design... 700 1987

Can someone explain to me the stupidity of temperature gauge design.
It stays in the middle no matter what the actual temperature.
In case of severe (catastrophic) overheating, it will go from "normal"
beyond red, in a second. There is NO time to react, or prevent engine loss.
I had overheating problems in many cars over time, and NONE suffered any
ill consequences. Volvo's are a different breed.
