Knock sensor + timing question 700 1989

Hi Andrew,

Your timing should read about 12 degrees BTDC. If you are pinging at this setting, try changing to the next grade of gas. These cars run best on higher octane when there is boost involved.

Your best gas mileage will be where the engine develops a slight pinging under extreme load (like starting off in high gear). If you are pinging under moderate load, back the timing off until it stops. Retarded cam timing will give a better low end pull (done with an offset bushing), but retarding the spark too much will ruin engine performance.

My 88 765T has adjustable spark, which I run higher than stock, and the 93 940 doesn't.
