87 244DL Weird Loss of acceleration hard to explain 200 1987

Hello all. I have an odd scenario going on. Sometimes, no matter what gear I'm in or what speed I'm doing, I lose response from my gas pedal. That is to say, no matter how much I depress the pedal, there is no sound from the engine, no increase in speed, and basically no effect. It happens more often on the highway, but it has begun happening on city streets going 20-40 MPH. To remedy the situation, I've found that if I kick the pedal all the way down to the ground, about a second after I do that, it kicks back into gear and I get acceleration. I have an automatic tranny that, when functioning normally, functions perfectly and smoothly. This doesn't happen all the time I'm in my car or even every day, but it is becoming more persistent. Any ideas?
