445 speedometer drive - Belinda? 444-544

I thought I just posted this but it didn't show up. Please forgive me if it is a duplication. I took apart the speedo drive assembly to clean/lube and now have a question about reassembly. There is a press fit ball that goes in after the cross shaft [odometer drive]. Initialy, I just drove it home then realized that it had jammed the shaft and frozen the whole setup. So the question is, how far do I press in the ball? Does the direction of rotation hold the shaft in position? There must be some parameters to account for counter rotation in reverse. If anyone has gone through this little exercise I could use some advice.
