Rapping start up 444-544

'66 122 stock B18D

At start up and during the first mile or so of driving there is a sharp rapping tone coming from the engine compartment. The rapping volume is directly proportional to work load. Tone stays about the same. After a mile or so the noise abates and does not return until the next cold start.

The noise is hard to locate but seems to be at the rear of the engine on the passenger side. No change after two different valve adjustment sessions.

The car is running _very_ well right now both for decent performance and good fuel economy (idles smooth, accellerates without hesitation, cruises for hours at 75 and gets close to 30 mpg).

Any guesses about the start up rapping (no, its not my neighbors 1000 watt stereo - that is a different issue) is appreciated. I suspect its an exhaust leak near the manifold. If so, how to check?
