A question for the motorheads out there 140-160

I am thinking about building a turbo B20 for my 74 144. This car has standard a B20F with a low ~8.7 compression ratio, which sounds attractive to use for a turbocharged engine. I was thinking of buying a separate engine to rebuild and put turbo on. Question is: Should I try hard to find a B20F, or can I make an earlier version B20 work just as well? Do I have to play with head gasket thickness to lower compression or are there other and maybe better ways of doing it? I'm pretty green at this tuning stuff but hope to learn fast.
