Failed Bad Heater Core 700

While traveling to work this morning steam began to come out of my heater vents and a large amount of coolant pooled on the passenger's floorboard. I'm assuming it's a failed heater core. Luckily, it still runs well (at least at first glance). Regardless, I'm now 75 miles away from home, tools and my mechanic. To get me back home, can I by-pass the heater core by connecting the in/out coolant hoses at the firewall? Thank you in advance.....
