New timing belt one tooth off: short cut adjustment possible? 700 1990

Okay, so I replaced my front seals, timing belt, and tensioner this weekend.

But... I think I'm one tooth off! I was very careful during the process, but apparently I goofed (or the new tensioner wasn't "tense" enough, and the belt jumped upon initial start up).

The symptoms: rough idle, poor acceleration, low top speed, engine is into the turbo way earlier than usual.

My question: is there a shortcut way to reposition the camshaft gear? Specifically, I'm wondering if I could do the following:

1. Remove just the upper timing cover
2. Mark the belt and camshaft-gear's current relationship
3. Loosen the tensioner
4. Un-bolt the cam-gear
5. Slip the belt and gear forward/off
5. Reposition the gear one tooth (and turn the camshaft that amount as well)
6. Slip the gear back on and tighten bolt
7. Start car, live happily

I am hoping to not have to face tearing the whole thing apart again, and frankly, if that's what's in store, I might have to bite the bullet and take it to my local indie mechanic: I don't have the cash, but don't want to lose another saturday working on the car (my house needs reapir as well).
