It does sound like you may have disloged the o-rings somewhere along the way.

As Ron said, there are different size (height) o-rings. I've always had the standard head gaskets and have no experience with anything other than the stock size. I don't agree with using gasket goo on them though. I have had excellent luck without it, preference thing I guess! Absolutely make sure that both surfaces are clean and free of old gasket or o-ring material.

Get new o-rings and a new gasket and try lifiting the pump up against the head while installing the mounting bolts (I use a water pump plier - looks like huge channel lock pliers). Be sure to snug the bolts evenly around the pump. In other words, don't install the bolts fully one at a time.

B16 installation is similar to the B18 B20 installation but a piece of hose is used instead of the o-rings.
