Sounds like your "new" starter has two flat, male terminals that will accept the push-on Blue/Yellow wire terminal — and you got on the wrong one.

With the starter now installed, you won't be able to see the terminal numbers, but I'll bet you put the Blue/Yellow to #16, which some older cars need to power the cold start injector when cranking. Terminal #16 is usually narrower than #50 (the other one). About 3/16" as opposed to 1/4". It's a power output, not an input.

Terminal #50 is the one you want, even if it's not in the same position as on your old starter.
