clacking noise from somewhere up top 200

Gentlemen,

1990 b230 na

After doing the head & cam, here is my new drama. When the car is cold and I start her up there is a clacking sound. When it warms up, completely gone. Too, when she is warm and I start her up, no clacking. Just when cold, like when sitting for a long time or over night.

There was no noise before attempting this project and now I have to go over each aspect of my efforts. Before I tear it down, I thought a little sage advice would be nice.

Here is what I know: removed each plug wire (runs worse until put back on), removed each injector connector (runs worse until back on), starts right up (hot or cold), idles fine (hunts a little bit), runs great, pulls hard, achieves normal opperating temp, great oil pressure, good voltage, firing order and plug wires are right, and changed oil & filter to be sure everything is clean, no oil leaks, no coolant leaks, no apparant vacuum leaks, all gaskets are new, new water pump installed at the same time, etc.

When I tapped the head (after cam install) for the autometer sender, I had it in several positions. The spot I tapped in the head is forward from the idiot light sensor (temp) and I know for sure it was a good location.

Could a husher have slipped out?

I know the valve lash is good 15 to 16 thou. but maybe something threw it off. Cracked shim? Or lash change due to missing husher?

This head has less than 400 miles on it, everything is new except for the valves which were cleaned up really nice.

Honestly, the sound seems mechanical, rythemic, and not related to rod knock, piston slap, or anything involving the bottom end.

I think the noise is under the valve cover. My friend stopped by to listen and though it was intake or fuel line related (?). We used a rubber hose to listen and poke around.

Cold start injector only works for a couple of seconds on start up, right?

I know there is a small exhaust leak (which my indy guy will resolve very soon) but this sound DEFINITELY is not related to that issue.

Any ideas?
