Suspicious price for R134 AC conversion 200 1983

My son had to get a new battery for his 1983 240 GL. His A/C has been worthless for a couple of years. I had tried to get info on a conversion to the new refrigerant, and found parts for over $200.

The gas station where he took the car for the battery quoted him something like $120 for parts and labor to convert; but it sounds to me like they are just sucking the old R12 out, and putting R134 in. Is this possible? Is it wise? Or is there some cheap kit out there?

I did warn my son to be sure they know it's been dead a long time--I have to believe the seals are all shot from drying out. Any other things to watch out for?
