10/30 oil burns in Volvo 780 Turbo. Warning!

Against all advice from lube places and Volvo workplaces is decided to use 10/30 oil for my 780 turbo. I did extensive on-line research and concluded that 10/30 was better than 20/50 for me here in LA. I have been using it for over a year and a half and the car never had a problem. I did notice when checking my oil level that the oil always looked very dark but I never really thought anything of it. Until today, I went to a lube place I’ve never been before, of course they advised 20/50 but I stuck to 10/30. After a few minutes the mechanic called me and told me that I should go for 20/50 because my oil was totally burned and there was not a lot left.He showed me the oil and it was totally black. He also told me that most Volvo’s burn the thinner oil. I have to drive for a while to see if 20/50 oil will not burn and disappear. I'm not technical I just love Volvo's so this is nothing more than a report of what happened to me.
Why do so many people advice 10/30 on the web, while the pro’s all advice 20/50?
