woohoo! swaybar is installed--but what about rust? 200

The swaybar I got is used and prior to install I cleaned the blemishes off the entire bar with a fine grit sandpaper to give it a nice silvery metallic sheen. Then I learned today from the Volvo tech that iPd swaybars have an anti-corrosion finish (that goldish color). So my question is there any sort of spray or varnish I can use to coat the swaybar to prevent rust forming? The reason I sandpapered the bar was that I thought I was gonna paint it but then decided not to as it's gonna be hidden behind the splash pan. And besides, it would have been too much work anyway.

Now that the bar is installed, I was thinking about spraying WD-40 on a rag and then rubbing it across the bar. Is that a good idea? Or this is not a big deal and leave the bar as it is.
