Headlight Woes (aka Prince of Darkness) 1994 944 900 1994

Having some difficulty solving this one. Any thoughts?

SYMPTOMS:

- Low beams inop
- Fuses okay
- Bulbs okay
- All other lights okay (parking, turn, flashers, brake, interior, etc.)
- High beams work, but only if held on
- Headlight relay does not click

DIAGNOSTIC STEPS:

This would typically mean "bad relay" to me, so I removed the relay, pried off the cover, and inspected it. All connections were solid and clean, nothing burned, and when current was applied at the battery the relay operated (closed and opened) normally.

So, I'm thinking it's not the relay. Also, I can get the lights to operate if I jump the contacts on the relay panel.

POSSIBLE CONTRIBUTING FACTOR:

Leading up to this I had removed the CR-718 radio and cut out the old harness. After digging up a wiring diagram online (not the official one) for the connector, I saw one contact labled "power from headlight switch," with 2 yellow/white wires so labled into that contact. I don't know how reliable this diagram is, but if it's correct, might I have done something by severing that connection? Or is this a red herring?

Thanks for your help. As it gets dark at 5:00 these days I'm in a bit of a pickle.

Cheers,
Matt
