crankshaft pulley question...just to clear things up for me 700

"crankshaft pulley, the original had lots of cracks in the rubber segment and sure enough the timing position changed with the new one"

hello
i saw this in another post by another brickster and got to thinking this may be my problem that i cant figure out: i've had rich running and when i put a timing light on my 89 740 GL i get 5 degrees instead of 12. i never really did understand this concept, could some please explane to me what i have to check for...could this be my problem?

any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
