Rear wagon defroster - stumped 700 1992

Hi All,
As I pause here to epoxy and super glue all the plastic I broke getting the inside trim off the rear lift gate (grr - the tan plastic is the most brittle of all - it's no urban legend), I realize I am stumped. I have continuity thru the heater grid (well about 0 ohms with my crappy little vom) and 12v at the in side and good ground on the black wire out. I can even alligator click a ground on that wire to where I can see it and touch to ground and see a spark so I even have current flowing thru the grid but no warming. Not one of the grid lines going across gets warm even after leaving it on 10 or 15 minutes. I can't figure out how it can be drawing current and not heat up at least one grid line. This is a puzzle to this simple mechanical engineer. Does anybody have advice or something I am not thinking of (gate inside trim epoxy job is drying by the pellet stove and almost cured)?
TIA
Robb McC
