245 Running rough - stumped with how to properly diagnos and repair 200 1988

Any suggestions or links of guidelines would be greatly appreciated. To summarize, the car cranks then stalls for about 3 - 4 tries. Eventually, it will crank and idle very erratically. It sounds more like a Harley than a Volvo wagon (haha). I have installed new plugs, wires, dist cap, and rotor. I have replaced old vacuum lines with new. I have cleaned flamed trap as well as all parts in the EGR system (hoses and everything connected to it). I have adjusted TPS to Bentley specs (clicks as soon as throttle is moved). The throttle body has been thoroughly cleaned as well as all hoses from the air filter back. Timing is set to 12 BTDC. Problems also include dash warning lights all come on while idling then either dim or go back out (idle increases when lights come on), and it smells like it's running very rich. Last weekend, I was allowing it to idle while listening for vacuum leaks and it began running fine (without me doing anything). Since then, the rough running problem still exists. Before any of this started, the valves would knock or rattle when I would give it gas while driving (almost like the timing was off).
