My Volvo is sick 200 1987

I have a 200DL wagon. This last winter it was very hard to start when the temp goes below 15 deg F. Its not cold anymore and it left my wife stranded this morning. When trying to start it sound like the timming belt slipped or something with the timming. It would backfire, chug chug, maybe one or two cylinders would hit for alittle while. When its acting this way all I can hope for is it starts before the battery goes dead. Also some times it runs very week. No guts at all. When it does this I sometimes can turn it off and restart while I'm still moving and it runs fine. Once it starts down the road it runs great. Thanks for any input.
