Tapping noise. 200 1979

This is regarding my 1979 242 with 414K miles. M-46 transmission.

There is a rather unusual tapping noise that seems to sync up with engine RPMs. Higher RPMs = faster tapping.

The tapping also gets louder the further down I press the accelerator.

If I drive with a light foot, the tapping is hardly noticeable, and if I floor the pedal, the tapping becomes much louder.

Should I be worried about this? Any ideas what might be causing it and how to fix it?

Thanks as always.
