Play in steering - 'wander-y' feeling in steering wheel... 200 1983

Hi again, list!

Wanted to share a little "oh-yeah!" moment to offset all the whining I've been doing about FI troubles, timing troubles, etc....

Previous owner stated that he thought the left tie rod end needed replacing, because of the play he felt in the wheel, and a bit of a shimmy at speed...

Jacked the car up; looked under the left side, and saw nothing untoward...

reomved the underbelly panel (is there any REAL reason to put that thing back?), and had my son turn the wheel while I watched... Lo and behold, the whole RACK was shifting up & down! Bolts that screw into the rack, AND the nuts on the u-bolt were ALL loose... Nice when a problem can be addressed with only a wrench, and no wallet-drainage!

Now... what could have caused those bolts to be loose in the first place?

Joe
