No Start Problem 700 1988

Solved. Weird; But solved.

The tip to add the second leg (87/1) on the relay switch harness worked. I created the lead, installed the harness in lieu of the relay and did this: Turn on the pumps and computer for about 3 seconds. Turn them off. Crank the engine and it catches. As soon as it does, flip the switch that turns the pumps and computer back on and the car is running! I repeated this odd sequence twice to convince myself. This might be close to what happens when the car is started with a normally functioning relay in place. I ran the engine for better than 1/2 hour after that to charge the battery.

After I shut the car off I hooked the battery up to a trickle charger and took a break for lunch.

After lunch I found the battery completely charged. I installed the AutoDiagnos diagnostic tool for LH Jetronic 2.0 - 2.2. You remove the connector from the computer in the passenger's footwell and place an adaptor in between the harness and computer that carries what looks like a serial connector. This plugs into a large handheld device that probably looked futurisitic back about 1990 or so. I figured when the diagnostic device prompted to "Start Engine" it would do nothing but crank...WRONG. The car fired right up on the first turn and half!

I ran through all the diagnostics (one per active pin) and did not find ONE fault! All parameters and grounds checked OK. I checked through everything again. No faults.

I unplugged the adapter and plugged the harness connector back in. The car now starts and runs just fine. I still don't hear the pump in the tank so it will be replaced. All I can figure is moving the connector on the computer made a bad connection good.

I hope someone finds this useful, and thanks for the tips.

BTW, the grounds for the tank pump were just fine as were the crimp connectors for the relay in the "rack".

Doug
