Clunking noise on 740

Hi there,
I have an 86 740 turbo diesel and I need to know where to start looking.
This may be vauge but maybe someone can give me some ideas.

If I am stopped, say at a red light, and I accelerate from the light when it changes, I hear a clunk which sounds to be coming from the rear end. It is not the tranny shifting as it happens almost right off the line, before a shift. I feel it has something to do with the back axle but would like to know if anyone has any ideas.
I also sometimes hear a similar sound when coming to a complete stop from a decent speed.

Thanks in advance for your ideas.
Steve
